Founded in 2016 by Sister Shongy Mahlo, a dedicated professional nurse. Santerno Health and Wellness was created in response to the gaps identified in health risk assessment events. During her tenure with a major medical scheme, Sister Shongy saw that many wellness events failed due to poor logistics and ineffective use of collected health data. This experience inspired her to form Santerno, with the mission of addressing these shortcomings by ensuring well-organised wellness events that truly manage health risks and improve employee well-being.
Since inception we have conducted thousands of individual screenings held over 500 events for some of the recognisable names in the industry. Notably, we provided services to companies such as Metropolitan, United Exports, Life Occupational Health, Discovery and Gems. At these events we typically achieve industry leading participation rates of over 70%. Because of how we approach the sensitive matter of HCT, two-thirds of the participants volunteer to take the HIV test with us. Recognising Santerno’s strength and passion in running health and wellness events AfroCentric, a Medscheme wellness subsidiary recognised the synergies that existed between the two companies and strategic partnership was entered into.

Sister Shongy Mahlo, the founder and director of Santerno Health and Wellness, brings over 35 years of nursing and managerial experience in rural and urban areas across South Africa and internationally. Holding a B Cur. (cum laude) and M Cur. from the University of Johannesburg, Sister Shongy is a Professional Nurse registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and BHF. Her passion for the nursing profession and dedication to high standards are the driving forces behind Santerno’s success. Her hands-on leadership ensures that our clients receive the highest level of service, freeing them to focus on their core business while we manage the health and wellness of their employees.
